Jazmine no! NO!

Posted in Music, News with tags , on January 4, 2011 by The Chief

Jazmine Sullivan is a brilliant, brilliant singer and both her albums have rocked my socks. Picture Rihanna’s voice, Mary J Blige’s on stage drama and Lil Kim’s insanity. Now imagine the polar opposite of that and tada! Jazmine.

Now why, WHY with a voice like that, would you decide you need a break Jazmine? We need you! These tweets have since been deleted but thanks to some nifty screen capture action on behalf of most of her followers, the upsetting evidence below.

I hope this is all just a horrible, horrible emotional mistake made after one too many vodkas.

Boys II Men in Vegas?

Posted in Music with tags , on December 30, 2010 by The Chief

Small admission: Boys II Men were my first boy band crush and I loved them with the fervour only a 12 year old girl could possess. I can hear my friends laughing but they don’t know!

Look at those matching white outfits! Ehem. Anyway. Apparently Boys II Men are looking at taking up residency at a Las Vegas casino which is unfortunate as I don’t live in Las Vegas.

According to founding member Nathan Morris, “This is something we’ve always wanted to do but it hasn’t panned out yet. We’ve been a touring group for so many years, running around the world, and it kind of gets tiring. We understand the music landscape has changed but one thing that is a constant is shows. We’re trying to see if any casino is open to having us stay.”

Interesting, but as the one-woman fan club holding you down over here on the other side of the world a little bit inconvenient for me. Yay for the Vegas peeps though…I guess.

Dear Lloyd Christopher Banks…

So hey, I know we didn’t get a chance to sit down and chat on Saturday but your security sort of got in the way. No it’s cool, don’t say anything to him, he just didn’t want you to be distracted by my astounding beauty and forget that you were there to work.

I have to say Mr. Banks that in the past I wasn’t your biggest fan. You’re good at what you do – there’s a reason they dubbed you the Punch line King – but I just couldn’t relate to you. Tony & Fif kept getting in the way with their arrests and general trouble making which is a shame because as it turns out, you’re actually kinda awesome as a person. This sounds like an innocuous statement but have you met Xzibit? Yeah, exactly.

Anyway as I was saying, I wasn’t your biggest fan. Then you stopped by Fadez*. As someone who made no publicity appearances and answered no press requests (I swear I’m not bitter), you took time out of your short stay to meet with your fans, sign autographs, take photos, meet the kids & make my baby brother’s day.

Oh and you had an entourage of two. TWO! Do you know how awesome that is? You weren’t precocious, you made time for every single person and sure it was only 20 minutes but you did not say no to a single photo, handshake or hug. You didn’t get a chance to see the little boy’s face on your way out, but as you turned around after giving him a quick handshake and half hug his face broke into the biggest smile I’ve ever seen. Meeting you must have been the most exciting thing to happen in his 10 years on earth and thankfully he didn’t have to go away thinking celebrities are a bunch of obnoxious dickheads. You let him stay a kid and I’d bet you’re now his favourite rapper. It would serve you well to remember that these kids do listen to you – don’t screw it up, alright?

I guess what I’m trying to say here, incase I wasn’t clear, is that you’re ok with me Lloyd Banks. Just stop pretending you’re not dying to meet me, you’re fooling no one but yourself.

Peace and all that good stuff,

S

*Fadez Barbershop is the shiznit. My brother, possessor of the thickest hair aside from my own, actually goes back to looking like a human after 10min in their barber chair. Below is him after a skills demo. Go see them, tell Will & Jerry I sent you. They love me (hey guys!)

M.I.A. & B.D.O. c/-T.G.M

Speaking of BDO, there’s another super unique and exciting individual set to rock the stages this January: none other than Ms Paper Planes herself, M.I.A. This London based, Sri Lanka born artist has earned the respect of hip hop heavyweights the world over for her commitment to socio-political commentary and, naturally, for her quirky and infectious beats. What makes her imminent visit even more of an oh-my-god moment is that, as both a musician and a visual artist, her performance style is nothing short of ridic-a-liss (insert Kanye, Swizz Beatz, Jay Z, Pusha T or CyHi da Prynce here.) This recent Letterman performance (chosen for its superior picture quality) showcases just a smidgen of what M.I.A is capable of in terms of rocking out – and in a festival setting she is in her absolute element. I think it safe to say that everyone from the die-hard fans to the less hip hop-inclined BDO festival heads will be not merely entertained but indeed gobsmacked by M.I.A’s set. The question is, will you be one of them?

Festivals and Lupe

Posted in General, Music, Tara Grover Morrissey with tags , , on December 15, 2010 by The Chief

A truly devastating side effect of loving hip hop and living in Sydney is that a great portion of your time and energy is spent desperately trawling the internet for rumours, hints, whisperings, murmurs, that your favourite artists might just possibly be gracing your shores. More heartbreaking still are the occasions on which said artists do make the journey – and you don’t see them. (Kanye, you’re here and you’re not performing? Make with the goods!) The good news is that patience pays off, and if the line-ups of the first of 2011’s festivals are anything to go by, the next few months are going to deliver in a way we never dreamed possible. Keri, could you please go put some pants on so we can talk? It’s very hard to have a serious conversation when you’re only wearing a size 000 piece of lycra and licking a safe door. Read more »

Review: My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy

Posted in Music, Reviews with tags , , on December 2, 2010 by The Chief

It’s that time of year again, when phrases such as “album of the year” get tossed around as we, the dedicated enthusiasts, attempt to make sense of yet another year of our lives through its soundtrack. But before we crank out the inevitable “top tens,” predictions, and recaps, let us bow our heads in a moment of silent gratitude for the mighty gift that we have received. I refer, of course, to My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy.
